A ‘2×3’ board that you buy is actually 1.5 inches thick, 2.5 inches wide and we can cut them 7.5 inches long…perfect! The traditional Jenga pieces are 1.5 cm thick, 2.5 cm wide and 7.5 cm long, making the jumbo jenga pieces couldn’t be simpler using 2×3 boards. You can totally play the traditional way too. They will roll and whatever color it lands on, they have to move a block of that color. Each side of the dice (die) is a different color and there is a corresponding set of blocks in each color. The roll ‘n go version puts a fun twist on the game, and I kept it simple for my young kids. I thought it would be fun to make a giant sized version for the yard with a ‘throw ‘n go’ option (I’m calling it Roll ‘n Go). 3 The photographer brought the animals close to the camera. Moreover, the practice of taking private photos of zoo animals was nowhere near as widespread back then as it is today, especially considering that, in many zoos, such as those in Berlin, Vienna, Leipzig, and Halle, it was only possible to take photographs on zoo premises by paying for a permit. The mainly privately run photography booths had been popular since the 1930s and 1940s for various reasons: firstly, they provided an opportunity to immortalise a visit to the zoo in an individual or family portrait – at a time when photographic equipment were still much more expensive and much heavier than they are today. Photographs of children holding lion cubs, which visitors could later have taken by the Berlin Zoo photographer, captured for a visitor’s photo album the moment in which they touched a juvenile predator. Other zoos followed suit with special shows and petting zoos for baby predators.Ī drawing in the Berliner Illustrirten Zeitung puts the role of the baby predator in a nutshell with the headline “A Live Animal Toy”. In a fenced-in enclosure, visitors were able to cuddle, stroke, and feed not just sheep and goats but also little lion and tiger cubs. The Berlin Zoological Garden had been organising its own ‘baby animal zoo’ every summer since 1931. 2 And some zoos did in fact provide this opportunity. “The desire to take a lion in one’s arms and stroke it is probably one of the most coveted amongst our zoo visitors”, as Hamburg’s Stellingen Zoo reported in 1926. Lions seem to have had a particularly strong appeal. There were reports about visitors’ desiring to get as close as possible to the baby animals at the zoo. The lion cub photo motif can be traced back to at least the 1930s, 1 revealed if nothing else by the clothing the little boy is wearing and the sepia colouring of the photo from Berlin Zoo, which was taken in 1939. Getting within touching distance of young predators like bears, lions, or leopards – what now seems perplexing was very popular for a long time. When did this motif emerge, and why has it disappeared from today’s zoos? What do photos like these reveal about the relationship between zoo visitors and lion cubs? What attitudes towards and ideas about ‘wild animals’ take shape in these images, and how did animals become photo objects in the first place? And finally: What is the animal here? Is it a predator, a zoo animal, or a stuffed toy? The quest for answers does not just take us through the history of photography practice and zookeeping, but also has a lot to do with the changing politics of animal images. Many zoos once gave visitors the opportunity to have their photos taken with a lion cub. In other photos, the subject of the photo looks outside the image, like in this photo, which was taken at the Berlin Zoo in 1939. Sometimes they look either lovingly or fearfully at the animal, sometimes they look directly at the camera. Many are probably familiar with the photo motif: a man, woman, or child with a young lion on their lap. A little boy with a lion cub on the Berlin Zoo photographer’s bench in 1939. In addition, Paint can now undo up to 50 subsequent changes. To add to the realism, the oil and watercolor brushes can only paint for a small distance before the user must re-click (this gives the illusion that the paintbrush has run out of paint). It also features "artistic" brushes composed of varying shades of gray and some degree of transparency that give a more realistic result. The version of Paint in Windows 7 and later features a ribbon in its user interface. This version saves in JPEG format by default. Paint in Windows Vista can undo a change up to 10 times, compared to 3 in previous versions it also includes a slider for image magnification and a crop function. In Windows Vista, the toolbar icons and default color palette were changed. In Windows XP and later, Paint uses GDI+ and therefore can natively save images as BMP, JPEG, GIF, TIFF and PNG without requiring additional graphics filters. Starting with Windows Me, the canvas size expands automatically when larger images are opened or pasted, instead of asking. This also allows Paint to use transparent backgrounds. Such plug-ins are included with Microsoft Office and Microsoft PhotoDraw. In Windows 95–98, Windows 2000 and Windows Me, Paint can open JPEG, GIF and 48-bit ( 16-bpp) TIF images and save images in JPEG and GIF formats when appropriate graphics filters are installed. Later versions of Paint do not support this feature. This functionality only works correctly if the color depth of images is 16-bits per pixel (bpp) or higher. Microsoft shipped an updated version of Paint with Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, which allows saving and loading a custom set of color wells as color palette (.pal) files. Microsoft had deprecated the MSP format, and Paintbrush could only read MSP files. This version was later superseded by Paintbrush in Windows 3.0, with a redesigned user interface, true color support, and support for the BMP and PCX file formats. Aside from "pencil" and "shape" tools and a brush that draws in 24 "brush shapes and patterns", the toolset also contained two features unique for the time: one the ability to draw Bézier curves and the other that forces lines to be drawn on three angles to create an isometric three-quarter perspective. It was a licensed version of ZSoft Corporation's PC Paintbrush that shipped with 24 tools and can read and write files only in the proprietary "MSP" format drawn in monochrome graphics. The first version of Paint was programmed by Dan McCabe and introduced with the first version of Windows, Windows 1.0, in November 1985 as a competitor to Macintosh's MacPaint. Microsoft eventually reversed course and announced an updated version of Paint in Windows 11, with Paint 3D being deprecated. However, Paint had continued to be included with Windows 10. Microsoft had happened to envision Paint 3D as a replacement. In July 2017, Microsoft added Paint to the list of deprecated features of Windows 10 and announced that it had become a free standalone application in Microsoft Store. For its simplicity and wide availability, it rapidly became one of the most used Windows applications, introducing many to painting on a computer for the first time. The program can be in color mode or two-color black-and-white, but there is no grayscale mode. The program opens, modifies and saves image files in Windows bitmap (BMP), JPEG, GIF, PNG, and single-page TIFF formats. Paint is a simple raster graphics editor that has been included with all versions of Microsoft Windows. IA-32, x86-64, and ARM (historically Itanium, DEC Alpha, MIPS, and PowerPC) Note that we only change the internal timeZoneOffset attribute, emit the timeZoneChanged() signal and update the widget if the new value is different to the old one. Self.emit(QtCore.SIGNAL("timeZoneChanged(int)"), value) The setTimeZone() method is also defined to be a slot - we show this in the next section. The getter just returns the internal time zone value. The timeZone property is implemented using the getTimeZone() getter method, the setTimeZone() setter method, and the resetTimeZone() method. The timeZoneChanged() signal is emitted whenever the user, or another component, changes the time zone property. The updateTime() method simply emits the current time every second when a time out occurs. Self.emit(QtCore.SIGNAL("timeChanged(QTime)"), ()) nnect(timer, QtCore.SIGNAL("timeout()"), self.updateTime) nnect(timer, QtCore.SIGNAL("timeout()"), self, QtCore.SLOT("update()")) We change the class's _init_() method to define an attribute to hold the time zone and, as well as connecting the timer to the widget's update() slot, we also connect it to the newly added updateTime() method. Signals that are declared in this way are emitted in the same way as any other signal. The variable must refer to a sequence of strings - we could have used a list instead of a tuple, for example. We use the _pyqtSignals_ class variable to define two signals that are used to inform other components of changes to the clock's time and time zone. _pyqtSignals_ = ("timeChanged(QTime)", "timeZoneChanged(int)") Normally, this isn't something that PyQt widgets need to do - arbitrary signals can be emitted at any time - but Qt Designer needs to be know about the custom widget's signals so that it can connect them to slots in other widgets. The first change we make to the original widget is to declare the signals the widget is able to emit. Refer to the original example to see how the clock performs tasks such as painting and event handling. Instead of quoting the example in full, we will only note the changes that need to be made to the Analog Clock example in order to integrate it with Qt Designer. The PyAnalogClock widget is a version of the Analog Clock example supplied with Qt 4 and PyQt4 which provides a property to allow the clock to show the time in different time zones, a slot to enable the time zone to be changed in response to signals from other components, and two signals of its own to report changes to the time and time zone. Since the custom widget code does not need to be built or combined with the plugin code, very little extra work is required in order to make custom widgets work with Qt Designer. In Python, an additional plugin class is also needed, but developers only need to put the modules containing the custom widget and plugin class on special paths so that Qt Designer can find them. The custom widget code is often compiled separately into applications that use forms which reference the custom widget. The custom widget and the plugin class are then compiled together to create a plugin that Qt Designer can load. In C++, developers have to create an additional plugin class, based on QDesignerCustomWidgetInterface, that informs Qt Designer about the custom widget's name and which is used to create instances of it for use in forms created by the user. You can create custom widget plugins that Qt Designer loads at run time to allow custom widgets to be used directly in the user interface design process.Since a custom widget's class is a subclass of a standard widget's class, that standard widget can be used as a placeholder. Standard widgets can be promoted to act as placeholders for custom widgets. Fortunately, Qt Designer was written with this problem in mind, and there are two ways that custom widgets can be represented. However, many applications are designed to use custom widgets and components, and these often need to be made available to designers. Most of the standard Qt widgets are available to users of Qt Designer, and these can be used to create arbitrarily complex user interfaces. In many respects, it separates the design of an application from its function, leaving designers in control of its look and feel and basic usability while developers write the underlying application logic. Qt Designer is a user interface design tool for Qt applications that makes it possible for non-programmers to create user interfaces for applications. All the signals, slots and properties defined in Python are accessible in Designer's user interface and behave just the same as for widgets written in C++. In addition to the full range of standard Qt widgets, you can now install your own pure Python custom widgets and use them in your designs. Recent versions of PyQt contain something special for developers who use Qt Designer to design the user interfaces for their applications. Single Instance, Our ETL system was running on a single EC2 node and we are vertically scaling as and when the need arose. The following are the 3 critical reasons for undergoing a technology transfer, Technology Selection: Kettle vs AWS Glue vs Airflow Deep down in my heart I know if not now, the next customer deployment - i.e larger than the current one is designed to fail. Yet our system rand successfully to cater the needs of my ever-demanding customers. If he has no supporting DevOps and infrastructure team around, that 16 hours shoot north to 18 hours or may be more. Those issues are sufficient for a caring data engineer to keep himself awake for almost 16 hours a day. Stored procedures are the de-facto choice when it comes to data munging, Pls get rid of them.Further, the legacy systems make it almost impossible for the IT team to even simplify the periodical backup(data) process.Delivering reports and analytics from OLTP databases is common even among the large corporations - Significant numbers of companies fail to deploy a Hadoop system or OLTP to OLAP scheme despite having huge funds because of the issues #1 and #2.Assuming software engineers can solve everything and there is no need for a data engineering speciality among the workforce.Low or no funding to invest in tools(and right people) to make life easy for every stakeholder including the paying customer, e.g ETLs, Data Experts, etc.Creating a wow factor is the primary, secondary, and tertiary concern to acquiring new labels, and seldom focusing on the nuances of technology to achieve excellence in delivery Small companies aspire for acquiring major enterprises in their customer list often trivialize the technology problem and treat them as people issues because 0. Those ETL tools came with a conditional free version where the best-of-the-class attorneys fail to understand the conditions. Last but not least, licensing them is almost always obscure.Reusability is practically impossible where we have to make copies for every new deployment and. They usually had connectors that made things easy but not extensible for a custom logic or complex algorithms.Workflow management tools that are popularly known as ETLs are usually graphical tools where the data engineer drags and drops actions and tasks in a closed environment. The major problems I encountered are the following, It worked but not without problems, we had a rough journey, we paid hefty prices in the process but eventually succeeded. i.e The most voluminous data transfer was around 25-30 million records at the frequency of 30 minutes with a promise of 100% data integrity for an F500 company. When I say large scale, I meant significantly large but not of the size of Social Media platforms' order. IntroductionsĪ robust data engineering framework cannot be deployed without using a sophisticated workflow management tool, I was using Pentaho Kettle extensively for large-scale deployments for a significant period of my career. In the second section, we shall study the 10 different branching strategies that Airflow provides to build complex data pipelines. The objective of this post is to explore a few obvious challenges of designing and deploying data engineering pipelines with a specific focus on trigger rules of Apache Airflow 2.0. Building in-house data-pipelines, using Pentaho Kettle at enterprise scale to enjoying the flexibility of Apache Airflow is one of the most significant parts of my data journey. To understand the value of an integration platform or a workflow management system - one should strive for excellence in maintaining and serving reliable data at large scale. I argued that those data pipeline processes can easily built in-house rather than depending on an external product.
